Meader has been elected chair of its board of governors for the standard one-year term, effective Sept. 1, 2011. Meader is the founder and managing partner of Trinity Private Equity Group, LP, an investment advisory and private equity investment firm located in Southlake, TX.

Elected vice-chair of the 18-member board was Alan M. Meder, SVP of Chicago-based Duff & Phelps Investment Management Co. and the chief risk officer and principal financial officer of three investment companies.

New chair Meader succeeds Margaret Franklin, president of Kinsale Wealth Management in Toronto, Canada. Franklin will continue to serve on the board as immediate past chair.

New incoming first term governors elected were: Attila Koksal (Turkey), Frederic P. Lebel (Switzerland), and Matthew H. Scanlan (United States). In addition, four governors – including Meder – were elected to serve a second three-year term that also commenced on Sept. 1. The three others are: Saeed Al-Hajeri (United Arab Emirates), Jane Shao, (China), and Roger Urwin (United Kingdom).

The CFA Institute is a global association for investment professionals that administers the CFA and CIPM curriculum and examination programs worldwide and advocates for high standards of practice within the global investment industry. The CFA Institute delegation – which included CFA Institute  president and CEO John Rogers, CFA; Board of Governors vice chair Daniel Meader, CFA; and Board of Governors member Alan Meder, CFA – also had an opportunity to meet with Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) chairman and CEO Richard Ketchum and SEC commissioners Troy Paredes and Luis Aguilar.

The Capitol Hill meetings offered CFA Institute an opportunity to inform a range of critical issues, including the importance of identifying, monitoring, and mitigating systemic risks in the financial system. The next congressional briefing is slated for July 2011.

I have found that some of these speakers do a nice job of presenting a topic or mindset about a world condition that is both well presented and well researched. For all the poor public speakers that we all have to suffer – Ted.com provides a platform of excellent speakers that can provide wonderful presentations in 10-20 minute segments. I was recently introduced to a nice presentation on China that I thought made several excellent points to those living in the West to better understand the challenges that we have working with China in the 21st century. Although Trinity does not have any direct investment exposure to China – we follow the capital flows in several markets – and the Chinese continue to increase their investment and influence in markets around the world.
